Colombias ex-president seeks referendum to alter peace deal

written by Adriaan Alsema February 23, 2017

Former Colombia President Alvaro Uribe announced Wednesday that he will be seeking a referendum to force changes to an ongoing peace process with demobilized FARC rebels.

The former president, whose family and former administrations are increasingly linked to war crimes, has been resisting peace with the FARC since talks were announced in 2012.

Even now a deal has been signed and is being executed, Uribe continued his resistance relentlessly on Wednesday.

. . .

Congress is currently debating the justice element of the peace deal that directly affects Uribe, under whose watch thousands of civilians were assassinated by the military.
