Santos and ELN invite Uribe to take part in peace talks, former presidents party declines

Santos and ELN invite Uribe to take part in peace talks, former president’s party declines
written by Stephen Gill January 24, 2017

Colombia’s government and the country’s last standing Marxist rebel group, the ELN, both have called on former President Alvaro Uribe to take part in peace talks due to begin on February 7.

President Juan Manuel Santos invited his predecessor to take part in the talks last week already. The ELN confirmed on Tuesday that Uribe is welcome, claiming “peace is made between adversaries.”

Uribe and his conservative Democratic Center party have run a bitter opposition campaign to the peace process with the FARC, until November last year Colombia’s largest rebel group.

. . .

Instead, the opposition has consistently demanded the guerrilla groups surrender and be the only party to appear before the court, a demand that would leave the majority of victims without justice and violate international humanitarian law if granted.
