Uruguay Objects to Sanction Venezuela in MERCOSUR

Uruguay Objects to Sanction Venezuela in MERCOSUR

Montevideo, Aug 10 (Prensa Latina) Uruguayan Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa reiterated today that the members of the Common Market of the South (MERCOSUR) cannot sanction Venezuela for not having approved the regulation for adhesion, because all members are in the same situation.

All the member countries have regulations yet to be approved. Uruguay has more than 50 to be approved and the same is true for Argentina. We cannot be so demanding, if we are not being so with ourselves, the minister remarked.

The head of the Uruguayan diplomacy clarified that the Brazilian, Argentine Paraguayan governments cannot adopt decisions by themselves, and said they should wait for what will happen on Friday this week, which is the deadline for Venezuela to implement the MERCOSUR trade regulation.

Nin Novoa said that maybe other states could present a proposal to decide what happens to Venezuela for not complying with the regulation, but he specified that consensus among all the bloc's members was necessary.
