Mexican journalist Lucia López Castillo is in a serious condition after surviving a shooting outside her home Veracruz on Sunday (21 August). One of her kidneys had to be removed because of the damage caused by the bullet.
López Castillo was shot by a masked man, according to Crónica de Xalapa. Her condition is complicated by the fact that she reportedly suffers from diabetes.
It is unclear whether her journalistic work was the reason for the assault. López Castillo, 42, writes for Cara Política, a bi-weekly magazine, and El Cuarto Poder, a local newspaper, both based in Poza Rica. She also contributes to the news website Pulso Político.
Cara Políticas editor-in-chief, Gloria Mendoza, said López Castillo steered clear of politically sensitive work and did not cover organised crime, writing mostly about general-interest news.
