Ecuador's Correa Leads Campaign to Eliminate Tax Havens

Ecuador's Correa Leads Campaign to Eliminate Tax Havens
Published 9 June 2016

Rafael Correa is the first head of state to commit to a campaign against worldwide tax havens.

President Rafael Correa of Ecuador personally committed to lead the way in making the necessary changes to eliminate tax havens throughout the world, reported Oxfam in a communique this week.

“We must create institutions in the world free of tax havens, where capital does not have a face nor responsibility,” said Correa.

“We are going to request the inclusion of this crucial issue in the agenda of the General Assembly of the United Nations. We will coordinate with the G77 group for the prohibition of tax havens,” he added.

Additionally, the head of state, along with some notable economists and academics, signed a letter issued by Oxfam urging world leaders to eliminate tax havens and financial opacity protecting multinationals.
