Iconic Cuban Band Buena Vista Social Club Ends Farewell Tour

A movie recalling the orchestra's career over the last 20 years will be premiered in December this year.

The concerts paid tribute to Ruben Gonzalez, Ibrahim Ferrer and Francisco Repilado (Compay Segundo), who founded the project and passed away.
Buena Vista Social Club, the orchestra that have played the role of an ambassador of traditional Cuban music to the world, say goodbye to its fans in the Cuban capital Saturday and Sunday.
After touring in all the five continents for one year and a half, the band end its "Good Bye Tour" with two big concerts at Havana's Karl Marx Theater in Havana.
"We will present a new show in which we have been working over the last few months," Manuel (Guajiro) Mirabal told the press on Thursday, with a repertoire that includes pieces by the group that are little-known to the audience, and others that are icons of the project, such as Chan Chan, El cuarto de Tula, Candela and Dos gardenias, among others.
Guitarist Eliades Ochoa, one of the founders, said that the Buena Vista Social Club has become a myth and its legacy will remain over time, because the world does not want it to end.
"We should end the 'Goodbye Tour' in Cuba, well, what better place to do it," he said.
