Argentina considers Arsat privatisation

Argentina considers Arsat privatisation
Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 27 April 2016

Argentina’s new government is strongly refocusing the country’s telecoms policies towards a more liberal model and is considering privatizing 49% of the public telco Arsat.

According to Héctor Huici, Minister of Information and Communication Technologies, speaking to the newspaper Página 12, the privatization is a real possibility as it is already incorporated into Arsat’s regulations.

“We are considering if private companies are really interested in entering Arsat’s capital, so its development can be improved and accelerated,” said Huici.

Since the new government was formed, Arsat has changed radically. From being a satellite-focused company which was readying its third satellite launch in three years, to cancelling the Arsat-3 project and seeing heavy budget reductions.

Given the resources, the public company is now focusing on finishing its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network and making it commercially available.

“We are creating a business plan for Arsat, which is why we are looking over the different possibilities for each unit: satellite, fibre, data centre and DTT,” added Huici.
