How long can it be before former president Alvaro Uribe faces trial in Colombia or takes the well-trodden path to exile in Florida?

Rumours have circulated for decades of his own and family members' involvement in the army-supported death squads, especially the United Self-Defence Forces of Colombia (AUC).

But the noose has tightened recently with close allies being charged and coming clean on death-squad activities.

Uribe's former head of security Mauricio Santoyo Velasco pleaded guilty on Monday in a US court to having helped the AUC.
