South American Union Concerned about Attempt to Topple Dilma Rousseff
Quito, Apr 12 (Prensa Latina) The Union of South American Nations (USAN) has expressed concern, in a statement, about legal security in Brazil and the region, in the wake of a decision to move forward with the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff.
The Commission of the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil decided yesterday to impeach the President despite the fact that, according to USAN , there is no evidence incriminating the president personally and directly in the perpetration of a crime.
The 12-member state USAN is headquartered in the Mitad del Mundo complex, in Ecuador, 14 km north of the capital.
The President can only be tried and ousted - revoking the people's mandate that elected her - if criminal acts with her active, fraudulent involvement has been proven, says the statement.
Accepting that a president can be dismissed from his/her post for alleged offenses of an administrative nature, for purely political reasons, will lead to the dangerous criminalization of the exercise of government, the statement continues.
USAN was founded in 2008. Its members are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela.
