Argentina: Leftwingers rally against gagging of TV channel

ARGENTINIAN opposition parties demonstrated yesterday in defence of anti-imperialist regional news broadcaster Telesur.

The “Hug for Telesur” rally outside the network’s Buenos Aires office came in response to right-wing president Mauricio Macri’s decision to drop the pan-Latin American broadcaster from basic cable TV packages.

The government also ditched its stake in Telesur last month.

Organisations present at the rally included the Front For Victory coalition of former president Cristina Fernandez and the Argentinian Communist Party.

Political analyst Atilio Boron told the hundreds of people present that the government was trying to impose a “communication dictatorship.”

He criticised a “lack of pluralism” and questioned why Mr Macri’s administration “feared Telesur” so much that it had made banning the channel a priority.
