Honduran officials were preventing Gustavo Castro from leaving the country despite fears over his safety.

Gustavo Castro, the Mexican national who witnessed the murder of environmental activist Berta Caceres, will finally be able to leave Honduras after a judge on Thursday repealed the order that had kept him trapped in Honduras.

The Honduran Office of the Public Prosecutor has banned Castro from leaving the country for 30 days, an order that was set to expire on Monday.

The Public Prosecutor issued a statement stating that they had requested Wednesday that the order keeping Castro in Honduras be lifted. The statement added that they reserved the right to call Castro back to the country should the need arise.

Castro is expected to fly back to Mexico on Friday.

(No doubt this decent man is very aware that the same people who shot him in Honduras can easily shoot him again in Mexico. I hope he will find a way to keep safe. Best wishes to Gustavo Castro, and may his courage inspire many others to wake up and help with the struggle.)

Key Witness in Berta Caceres'' Murder Leaves Honduras

Tegucigalpa, Apr 1 (Prensa Latina) The Mexican Gustavo Castro, key witness in the murder of indigenous leader and environmental activist Berta Caceres left Honduras after being held for several weeks by the authorities.
Gustavo Castro, also environmental activist departed the capital at 6:20 am.

The Mexican sociologist could finally leave the country on Thursday after receiving authorization from a judge of the Intibuca department, which lifted the restriction imposed by the authorities as part of the investigative process.

The Public Ministry said in a statement that it is possible that in the future 'the presence of the witness may be necessary if new elements emerge during the investigation'.

Gustavo Castro was with Caceres at the moment when two armed men raided her house and shot her dead on March 3.

For weeks, human rights activists and social forums demanded the Honduran State to allow Castro leaving the country because they feared that those responsible for the crime would go after him.
