Kaleil Isaza Tuzman, the U.S. businessman detained in Colombia pending extradition proceedings, is being subjected to psychological harm at a super-max prison in Bogota, his lawyers claim.
In an 18-page letter filed in federal court in Manhattan on Wednesday, Tuzmans lawyers claim he is being imprisoned in lock-down solitary confinement under fluorescent lights left on 24 hours per day without having received requested medical or psychological care.
Tuzman has gone from one unacceptable situation where he was subjected to ongoing physical and psychological harm to another where he is subject to ongoing psychological harm, write Avi Weitzman and Reed Brodsky, Tuzmans lawyers.
Preet Bharara, the U.S. Attorney in Manhattan, indicted the Harvard-educated and Boston-born Tuzman for accounting fraud in September. Federal prosecutors in Bhararas office also had Tuzman arrested in Colombia, where he has been working on a business venture, even though Tuzman travels back and forth to the U.S. fairly often. As a result, Tuzman spent about two months in the notorious La Picota prison, where he was subjected to physical abuse and housed with accused drug traffickers and narco-terrorists who are wanted by foreign governments, mostly the U.S.
