Lawyers, the Target of Violence in Honduras

Lawyers, the Target of Violence in Honduras

Tegucigalpa, Sep 17 (Prensa Latina) More than one hundred lawyers lost their lives in Honduras due to violence in the past six years, revealed the National Human Rights Commissioner (Conadeh). At least 26 killings of lawyers were registered only in the past 20 months.

Practicing law became a high risk profession, said the Head of Conadeh, Roberto Herrera.

At least 88 percent of the total of lawyers who died violently in this period were executed with firearms, and 94 percent of the cases remain unpunished, denounced Conadeh. The Honduran ombudsman said the State must guarantee the lawyers' security to do their work without any kind of intimidation.

According to the Observatory of Violence of the National Autonomous University of Honduras, the homicide rate in 2014 was 68 per every 100,000 inhabitants, amounting to some 16 violent deaths a day, placing the country among those with the highest number of homicides in the world.
