Representatives of Cuba and three other countries providing support to peace talks between the Colombian government and FARC guerrillas issued an appeal on Tuesday for the "rapid de-escalation of the armed conflict" and for both sides to undertake confidence-building measures.

A statement on behalf of the governments of Cuba, Norway, Venezuela and Chile was read to reporters by Cuban official Rodolfo Benitez, with Norwegian representative Idun Aarak Tvedp at his side.

"These steps are essential to guarantee the conditions and the propitious climate that will permit agreements to be reached on the pending questions on the agenda of the talks, including the adoption of a bilateral and definitive cease-fire ..." the statement said.

Cuba, Norway, Venezuela and Chile reaffirmed their commitment to continue with their contributions to advance the talks that have been going on in Havana since November 2012 and the adoption in the near term of a final agreement to end the conflict and build a "stable and lasting" peace in Colombia.
