South Florida Congressional Republicans Call for TPS for Guatemalans

Three South Florida Republicans in Congress--U.S. Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Carlos Curbelo and Mario Diaz-Balart--want Guatemala nationals to have Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in the U.S. due to natural disasters in that Latin American nation, allowing them to temporarily live and work in the U.S.
On Wednesday, Ros-Lehtinen teamed up with U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel, D-NY, the ranking Democrat on the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, in sending a letter to U.S. Homeland Security Sec. Jeh Johnson on the matter.
I am honored to lead a bipartisan letter with Eliot to Secretary Johnson urging the Obama administration to grant Temporary Protective Status (TPS) to Guatemalans. Making this designation will help showcase the commitment of the U.S. to support our allies in our hemisphere, Ros-Lehtinen said. With TPS, Guatemalans residing in the United States would have the ability to work here, pay taxes, and help bring stability to their nation through much needed remittances. In addition, TPS designation would help provide much needed humanitarian relief to Guatemalans who contribute to our communities throughout the United States.
Temporary Protective Status for Guatemalans living in the United States is long overdue, Engel insisted. Thousands of Guatemalans living in the United States are unable to return home because of the damage caused by drought and consistent destructive tropical weather patterns. These individuals need to be brought out of the shadows and treated with the same protections as those from neighboring El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua living in the United States. With our letter, Rep. Ros-Lehtinen and I are demonstrating the bipartisan support in Congress for granting TPS to Guatemala.
