Juárez wants U.S. motorists to pay $40 million in traffic fines

JUÁREZ >> U.S. motorists owe Juárez more than $40 million in unpaid traffic fines — and Juárez wants to collect.

Juárez officials said this week that they are going to start talking with U.S. authorities about finding ways to collect the money, and they want to return thousands of U.S. driver licenses and vehicle plates that have been piling up. Most of them belong to Texas and New Mexico drivers.

U.S. officials say the plan is not practical because there are no current U.S. laws that allow for the enforcement of traffic violations in a foreign country.

Still, Juárez officials said they are losing revenue because of the unpaid fines and are looking into having a Mexican government registrar on U.S. soil to assist with the payment of fines.
