Correa warns of coup plot

The opposition had everything ready for their opposition plot against the government, Ecuadorean president Rafael Correa said while speaking on his weekly program on Saturday, from Italy.
Correa, following days of protests, sometimes violent, outside the head offices of governing party PAIS Alliance, said the opposition had the money and logistics prepared. The Ecuadorean leader called on people in the country to remain strong and firm in light of the right-wing attacks.
They wanted to wear us down by 2016
but here, nobody gets tired, were stronger than ever, he said. The protests were initially against citizens having to pay a very small tax on large inheritances, but now the right-wing protesters are openly calling for the ousting of the elected government.
In 2013, Correa was elected in a landslide victory with 57 percent of the vote.
The protests have been counted by government supporters, who have outnumbered the opposition protestors but have also been met with violence from the right-wing demonstrators. Large numbers of police have been deployed each night to prevent violence or injuries.

(160,645 posts)These ugly, ugly people have no respect for democracy, they hate it. They hate it when the 90% gets an honest chance to elect the leaders who will work for the whole country.
Here's one of their dirty leaders, mentioned in your link:

(6,837 posts)leftist governments in the region. Its news coverage cannot be taken seriously given it simply gives the chavista line.
The English language based wing of Telesur is based in Quito.

(15,750 posts)But the story will probably gain legs with our LatAm group "coupies" as another nefarious plot against "left-wing" governments.

(6,837 posts)Thats what these latest measures taken by Correa are all about. Not that they are popular or anything. And the references to coup are all the same chavista type bullshit.

(29,322 posts)Can't remember who but there was a rally & protest outside one of those "news" buildings chanting demands to "tell the truth" and this was even before the actual coup attempt on Chavez where the corporate press aided and abetted. Information war on South America is very bad.
Protesters hit Caracas streets to demand 'truth' over Chávez's health
Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Venezuela's capital on Sunday, demanding the government provide complete details about the health of ailing president Hugo Chávez. At the same time, Chávez supporters staged their own rally in the city.
Protesters waving Venezuelan flags chanted "tell the truth!" as they marched through eastern Caracas. They accused government officials of keeping from the public a full account of Chávez's condition.
"They don't tell us the truth," complained Mildred Moreau, a 64-year-old woman who said Chávez isn't healthy enough to govern the country. "We feel that they are trying to trick us."

(21,597 posts)and I guess we should trust who? I find telesur has great coverage and is trustworthy. Talk to folks who actually live there and ask them what news sources they use.

(24,010 posts)Yup! It's a line I'd like to know about, and is available NOWHERE IN THE CORPORATE PRESS. So, hats off to Telesur!
With the Corporate Press SO ONE-SIDED, to the point of absurdity (not to mention baldfaced lying), it is important to balance that relentless brainwashing against the Left in Latin America (and here, for that matter) with OTHER SOURCES OF INFORMATION.
We once had a Fairness Doctrine here, and we once had fairly decent alternative information and views from PBS and the BBC. Not any more. They've both gone Corporate. Telesur is nothing more, and nothing less, than an assertion of the Fairness Doctrine. It is a non-Corporate PBS. Its "leftism" is a reflection of the people themselves, whose MAJORITY viewpoint is EDITED OUT of the Corporate News.
So, you have the New York Slimes, the Wall Street Urinal, the Washington Psst, the Miami Hairball, Faux News and the alphabet soup of Corporate Liars on TV/radio, and you also have all their corporate monopoly compadres south of the border, and the rest of us who are interested in Latin America have Telesur. Things are still very lopsided toward the rightwing 0.01%, but, hey, we get to have a little Leftist slant somewhere, don't we? Or, would you kill it, and have only your viewpoint broadcast and published?
In any case, reporting that the president of Ecuador warned of a rightwing coup d'etat attempt is not a "chavista line." It's what he said. And, as president of Ecuador, what he said gets reported, right? Or maybe not. Maybe you'd rather that the president of Ecuador's statements NOT be reported.

(24,010 posts)...and any other news source that doesn't toe the Corporate line.
Please tell us that you want Telesur to continue to be funded by governments in Latin America. Tell us you like this opportunity for voices and views that, previously, had no media outlet, to be heard.
I don't believe that that's what you want--Telesur to continue--so your "I don't mind" is insincere, in my opinion.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

(29,322 posts)Loved "Need to know" with the former host but lost interest quickly with the bigger names.
BBC is far more garbage & bias than the average. Their Scottish Independence coverage is an excellent example of this.
The information wars and how it relates to South America is truly awful. At-least there is something like Al-Monitor for the Middle East but I don't know what English language source cuts through the bias and focus on issues & current events that are the focus in South America rather than what the US media thinks is important. Silence on Columbia that's why I appreciate Judi Lynn so much.`
