Colombian marines train El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras river forces

Inigo Guevara, Washington, DC - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

18 May 2015

The Colombian Navy's Marine Corps concluded a series of training courses for Honduran, Guatemalan, and El Salvadorian troops on 17 May.

The effort included river pilot training for Honduran naval infantry and river operations training for Guatemalan and El Salvadorian troops.

Training was conducted under the auspices of the US-sponsored Triangular Training Co-operation Programme (Programa de Cooperación Triangular or PCT), through which Central American and Caribbean states are trained by third party countries that have well-established military forces with significant capabilities, such as Colombia. Training can include counterterrorism, riverine and amphibious operations, demining, tactical diving, and sea survival.

According to the Colombian Navy, it has so far trained 323 security force personnel from Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Panama through the PCT.
