Gladys Polhemus: Suspend aid to Honduras, demand human rights

Thirty-five years ago, Archbishop Oscar Romero lost his life after beseeching the soldiers of El Salvador to “stop the repression, stop the killing.”

Since my daughter traveled to Honduras in the 1980s, I have followed U.S. military involvement in Central America. I am distressed that the people of the region continue to suffer from poverty and violence. The stories of people fleeing violence to live a better life are the same now as then. The few wealthy families that control the government and the economy must be held accountable for their actions so that the basic rights of the people are respected.

We don’t like the “Prosperity Plan” proposed by the White House because we have seen time and time again that militarization exacerbates violence. As Congress considers this legislation, we urge them to: suspend all U.S. police and military aid to Honduras; condition all U.S. aid on respect for human rights; insist on accountability by the government and all organizations receiving U.S. assistance.
