Cuba says fast track to restoring ties 'depends on U.S.'

Cuba says fast track to restoring ties 'depends on U.S.'

{snips}

Cuba would agree to restore diplomatic relations with the United States in time for the April Summit of the Americas if Washington quickly and convincingly removes the Caribbean country from a list of state sponsors of terrorism, a senior Cuban official said on Wednesday.
<...>
"It depends on what the United States does. It does not depend on Cuba," Gustavo Machin, deputy director of U.S. affairs for the Cuban foreign ministry, told reporters on Wednesday. "It depends on whether we are really taken off the list of terrorist countries."

In Washington, a senior U.S. State Department official said re-establishing diplomatic relations should not be tied to Cuba's place on the terrorist list. If Cuba insists on linking them, it could delay restoring ties, the official suggested.

The official said a State Department review about whether to remove Cuba from the list will be completed "very soon," in weeks at most.

1. I'm still waiting for a response as to why some are excited for the reestablishment of US ties

Hasn't Maduro accused the US of being behind every supposed coup attempt? Doesn't that mean basically that Raul simply doesn't care about what his closest ally has to say and scoffs off any denouncement of any supposed US-backed coups?

Continuing in pulling straw man arguments from your nether-regions is of no help in this endeavor.

This is a discussion board, after all, and if your best response to my question is "Figure it out yourself," I'm just gonna have to take that as a sign that you don't have an answer which won't make you come off as a hypocrite. I'm actually curious to know the answer from the I<3Hugo fan club because they're the ones who are the most fervent anti-US individuals in this forum, and would actually like to know how they feel about their model socialist nation wanting to get close with the supposed sworn enemy of socialist nations, especially after Maduro has repeatedly accused the US of being behind every supposed coup against him.

5. They're right: it's up to the U.S., of course.

We wouldn't be at this odd place now if the rest of Latin America started putting pressure on the US to remove the embargo, take Cuba off the terrorist list, etc., etc.

As it was BEFORE the approach of the next summit, Latin America was rerouting a lot of their plans to include Cuba in regional meetings, etc., and not targeted in the future by the U.S. Latin America, even Colombia after Uribe, started moving toward protecting Cuba's rights in the Western Hemisphere.

It was going to be rough sledding for future US delegates to regional conferences showing up at meetings where Cuba was certainly going to be invited to participate. We all know that.

This slick sudden move to make alleged concessions toward Cuba was as we know, a grandstand play for appearances to overcome the resistance other countries have toward the ill treatment the US has maintained toward this small island over 50 years.

As long as the fascists in Congress still maintain a loud, belligerent voice, they will have to reap the benefits of their dirty, uncivilized behavior toward the Cuban people.

Obama should realize he can't write checks with his mouth his war mongering Congress won't support. It will take a true Democratic majority in both houses before real progress is possible, no doubt.

6. The US put Cuba on the list primarily because of some criminals who went there.

No mention that the US government terrorized Cuba. No mention that the US gov't allowed Miami based exiles to commit heinous acts of terrorism (in violation of US & international law) and remain in Miami - no charges.

The US has and is funding terrorist operatives in Florida - IOW, the US is a state sponsor of terrorism.

IMO, Cuba should be demanding equal reciprocal footing regarding ANY US claims of Cuba belonging on the state sponsored terra list.

a brutal, evil system which subjugated, enslaved an entire nation, made them all unwanted outsiders in their own land, just like what happened here to the Native Americans, and throughout the other Americas, to the unfathomable loss of millions of lives.

Talk about terrorism. Unbelievable.

Any country with a piece of work like former CIA mass murderer, Luis Posada Carriles walking the streets as a free old monster has no right whatsoever to assign ANY other country to its "terror list."
