Colombia Still Shaken by Murders of Four Children

Colombia Still Shaken by Murders of Four Children

Botoga, Feb 8 (Prensa Latina) Colombia is still shaken by the murders of four children in Florencia, the capital of the southern department of Caqueta, while marches of condemnation are scheduled for Sunday in several cities of the country.

On Saturday, thousands of people accompanied the funeral procession of the four siblings, held in the downtown funeral home La Basilica, while a spontaneous demonstration was held in solidarity with the Vanegas Giraldo family, the parents of the murdered children.

Civic demonstrations have taken place since Saturday in Florencia, where people wearing white t-shirts and waving white flags, as a symbol of the peace Colombia needs, have taken to the streets. Marches are scheduled for Sunday and Monday in several Colombian cities to condemn the excessive violence in that unprecedented crime.

The police confirmed that a special squad of investigators was appointed to clarify the crimes as soon as possible and find the perpetrators of such an abominable crime, committed last Thursday. The department of legal medicine in Caqueta noted that the children, aged 4, 10, 14 and 17, were shot in the head.

The children's family had been threatened, while other stories say that their parents had denounced extortion attempts to make them abandon the ranch where they lived in a rural zone in Caqueta.

At a meeting of the Council of Ministers on Saturday, President Juan Manuel Santos instructed the general director of the Colombian Police, General Rodolfo Palomino, to travel to Florence and carry out the investigation into the massacre.
