Soccer team president dies in road shooting in Honduras

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Authorities in Honduras say the president of the Real Espana soccer team has been shot to death by unknown assailants in the northern part of the violence-wracked Central American country.

The National Bureau of Criminal Investigation says businessman Mario Verdial was killed Thursday when his car was fired on from two other cars that then escaped. Bureau Commissioner Leandro Osorio says Verdial and his bodyguard died along with a passing taxi driver who was hit by a stray bullet.

The shooting happened in Honduras' Cortes region, which is one of the most dangerous areas of Honduras. Honduras has the world's highest homicide rate, with 66 killings for every 100,000 inhabitants. The rate in Cortes is more than double that, at about 150 homicides per 100,000 people.

in Mexico and Central America, and possibly South America, too, where the actual losing team itself could get executed after a loss.

Hardly worth the effort!
