Chilean Chancellor Refuses to Meet Former Bolivian President

Chilean Chancellor Refuses to Meet Former Bolivian President

February 02 19:08 2015

Heraldo Muñoz, Chilean Chancellor, assured that he won’t meet the former Bolivian President Carlos Mesa during his upcoming visit to Chile in March.

SANTIAGO — The Minister of Foreign Affairs referred to Mesa’s visit to our country in March by pointing out that he won’t meet Mesa ‘by any means’.

The former Bolivian president will come to Chile to gather with organisations and local opinion leaders in favor of the lawsuit demanding a sovereign access from La Paz to the sea through Chilean territory.

“Former President Mesa has the freedom to come to Chile and visit our country without any major impediment, but I won’t meet him by any means,” remarked Muñoz during a press conference.

The Chancellor also added that even though “none of the government authorities will receive Mr. Mesa (…), if some people want to meet him, they’re free to do it.”

Carlos Mesa was involved in the Bolivian gas struggle, following US-supported former President Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada (who suddenly had to leave) and the ensuing conflict, during the George W Bush years.
