The Ecuadorean National Assembly will meet Monday in its final session of 2014 to discuss several legislative measures, including an official resolution in support of the Venezuelan government.
The draft resolution will likely be approved in light of the recent U.S. imposed economic sanctions targeting Venezuelan officials who will have their U.S. visas revoked, as well have any assets held in the United States confiscated.
The U.S. government claims that Venezuelan government officials committed human rights violations during violent right-wing opposition protests that erupted in the country in February.
Despite U.S. claims, the Venezuelan government has consistently denied that excessive force was used against protesters. It maintains that any action taken was in order to protect the lives of ordinary citizens and that U.S. support for the right-wing opposition protesters is part of strategy to affect regime change in the oil-rich Latin American country.
Since approving the sanctions, several other Latin American countries have also issued declarations of support to the Venezuelan government.
