....The Falkland Islands will hold a referendum on their political status in 2013, the local government announced Tuesday, in a bid to end the bitter territorial dispute between Britain and Argentina.
Gavin Short, chairman of the Falklands' legislative assembly, said the residents of the British overseas territory had no wish to be ruled by Buenos Aires, which claims the Falklands are occupied Argentine territory.
"We have decided, with the full support of the British government, to hold a referendum on the Falkland Islands to eliminate any possible doubt about our wishes," said Short, adding the vote would be held in the first half of 2013.
"I have no doubt that the people of the Falklands wish for the Islands to remain a self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom," he said.

story posted in LBN but should go here too. I can't wait to hear Argentina's committment to accept the islanders' wishes.

http://www.eluniversal.com/nacional-y-politica/120614/venezuela-lobbies-for-a-uk-argentina-deal
In the opinion of Venezuela's Ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS) Roy Chaderton, the referendum for self-determination of Falkland Islands is "a mockery." For this reason, the diplomat made an appeal to lobby so that the United Kingdom accepts to make a deal with Argentina as to the sovereignty of the islands.
The British could invade the Venezuelan island Orchila, "take the Marines out there and put one thousand British and hold a referendum the following day," Chaderton told TV network Telesur in Caracas, Efe quoted.
The Venezuelan ambassador spoke in this way at the OAS on Thursday, the day when Argentina's President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner is to appear at the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization to press her country sovereignty claims on Falkland Islands, under the British domain since 1833. She also prepares to request the United Kingdom to abide by the resolutions that urge both parties to negotiation.
To Chaderton's mind, it will be more and more difficult for the United Kingdom to "circumvent the debate." He underscored that the UN Committee on Decolonization based in New York is "a sounding box" where Argentina's supporters will make "much noise."

quite the analogy from the brilliant Venezuelan ambassador.
