PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) - Leading opposition factions are alleging that Haiti's presidentially appointed electoral council is stacking the deck in favor of President Michel Martelly, who has scheduled long-delayed legislative and municipal elections for October.
Parties complaining of exclusion and unfair advantages include the Unity party of former President Rene Preval and the Lavalas Family founded by former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. They are among the major opposition groups that boycotted election talks earlier in the year and have refused to register with the Provisional Electoral Council, which they contend is rigged.
An accord setting Oct. 26 as election day has not been authorized by the Senate, where a group of staunch Martelly opponents argue it is unconstitutional.
The electoral council picked by Martelly has only seven of its mandated nine members and its president, Fritzo Canton, is a lawyer who is defending former dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier against charges of embezzlement and human rights abuses.

As you recall, Jean-Claude and his father, François Duvalier were both A-OK with this government, as they murdered and terrorized their way through their presidencies, treating the Haitian people like rubbish, and keeping them living in a state of true terror at the constant mercy of the ?Tonton Macoutes, some of whom became the people who assisted in overthrowing Aristide for the US both times, as paramilitaries. What a sordid, horrific history has been visited upon these citizens since their ancestors dared to overthrow their vicious "owners," a "crime" for which the European-descended people have never forgiven them.
The US corporate media, or stenographer pool, couldn't have been more compliant in keeping the US population, their customers, completely in the dark about the atrocities which were used against the citizens to keep them in a constant state of fear.
For the one strange DU interloper who has claimed Haiti can't be referenced in this forum, it should be underscored again, the OTHER half of the island is most certainly considered Latin America, so no one sober would have the nerve to claim Haiti may not be discussed in this forum.

Yes - some do have strange deluded notions as to what constitutes Latin America.

Maybe when it's down to a lot of rocks, and gaping pits in the earth, and a shark infested sea, and people to weak to cry out any longer, THEN the U.S. will allow the people who are still conscious to some degree to elect their own President, finally, but by then it will be, of course, far too late.
I can't begin to imagine how Haiti can survive so much hatred and abuse. This happens to any country which can't fight back and doesn't want to be enslaved by the oligarchs any longer.
It's amazing, isn't it?
At least Cuba has sent doctors there to minister to as many patients as they can handle.....
