2014 Cuba film festival to honor Garcia Marquez

2014 Cuba film festival to honor Garcia Marquez

Cuba is dedicating this year’s Havana Film Festival to the late Nobel Prize-winning novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Garcia Marquez was a longtime friend of former leader Fidel Castro and also a major backer of Cuba’s marquee international cinema bash.

Festival official Ivan Giroud says Garcia Marquez’s widow and children had been told of the decision to honor the Colombian writer affectionately known as “Gabo.”

Havana’s film festival takes place each December.

Attaching this interesting anecdote to your thread:

When Garcia Marquez Paid a Visit to Cuban Amaranta

Havana, Apr 23 (Prensa Latina) A Cuban family feels special sorrow for the passing away of the author of One Hundred Years of Solitude, because one of its members was named Amaranta like the novels character.
The love of Olamis Aguiar for the legendary work of Gabriel Garcia Marquez became flesh and blood in her daughter Amaranta.

Olamis and Amaranta could never imagine that standing at a street crossing in their neighborhood of Buenavista in Havana, would see a car with the famous writer incide. Gabo looked their way as the mother was saying to her 8-year old daughter "look Amaranta, there goes Gabriel García Márquez."

When he heard the name of one of his Macondo characters, the Nobel Literature Prize of 1982 did everything possible to know more about that Amaranta.

He decided to use the power of the media to look for that girl. The genius of Aracataca, Colombia, went to a local TV station and asked to transmit the message asking that the mother and child crossing the Havana 31 Street to please get in touch with Canal Habana.
