Peruvian club fined $12,000 for racist fan chants

Peruvian club fined $12,000 for racist fan chants
The Associated Press March 24, 2014

ASUNCION, Paraguay — Peruvian club Real Garcilaso has been fined $12,000 following an incident last month in which club supporters racially abused black Brazilian player Tinga of club Cruzeiro in a Copa Libertadores match.

CONMEBOL, the governing body of South American football, announced the fine Monday and warned the club could face stiffer penalties including forcing it to play in an empty home stadium if similar incidents occur.

Tinga was taunted with monkey chants during the game, won 2-1 by Real Garcilaso.

Racist behavior is a long-standing problem at matches in Europe, particularly in eastern and southern Europe. World governing body FIFA has sponsored anti-racism campaigns that have had modest success. It is less of a problem in Latin America, where hooligan violence is the main menace.
