Uruguay's neighbors now considering legalization of pot

The taboo is broken: Argentina's new anti-drug czar says the country ‘deserves’ the debate, while Chile's new president could ease marijuana laws.

LIMA, Peru — Argentina has given the first sign that Uruguay’s groundbreaking cannabis reform just may have started a domino effect across Latin America.

Following the momentous vote by its smaller neighbor’s senate this month — making it the first nation in the world to completely legalize the soft drug — Argentina’s anti-drug czar Juan Carlos Molina has called for a public discussion in his country about emulating the measure.

“Argentina deserves a good debate about this,” Molina told local radio. “We have the capacity to do it. We should not underestimate ourselves.”

Crucially, Molina, a Catholic priest appointed earlier this month by President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner as head of her government’s counternarcotics agency, said his boss also wanted a new approach.

Didn't Obama go there on a summit meeting and said no to marijuna legalization? flashcloud Dec 2013 #1
You're so right! That summit in Colombia went far less well for the US than was hoped. Judi Lynn Dec 2013 #2

The rigid, unworkable position on maintaining that iron grip control over the Americas through the pretense of fighting drugs didn't go as well for him as he had hoped, and the whole event ended a lot grumpier than had been anticipated.

The Americas, on the other hand, became more united in their resolve to keep pushing for an intelligent solution.

Thanks for the reminder, flashcloud! Welcome to D.U.

Funny thing is I made this account because r/politics (reddit) went full libertarian in their views.

At least DU offers the chance of seeing what lots of people bring forward and post in their search for as much information as possible, so theoretically it just might be possible here to read more than you could find randomly on your own, which also saves time!

A lot of people have left DU for the same reason, since so many right-wingers started infesting the place in their attempt to crowd out all the actual democratic people, liberals, progressives, for whom the boards was created, in the first place. It's a real shame as there have been some unbelievably brilliant people here, however, there are amazing people who have also stayed, who are determined to keep pursuing the truth, too.

The goal of the right-wingers here is clearly to engage others in trying to defend themselves against the underhanded right-wing attacks, thereby screwing the purpose of the thread altogether, and the subject getting totally sidelined. It's definitely a different place than it was in the beginning because people are damned fed up with the crap the non-DU'ers are forcing upon others, but that's O.K. Many of us come to learn, to keep updated, or definitely to share things they just discovered and feel they have to share with their friends and fellow progressives, as it's too important to keep to one's self!

Sorry your earlier website source went south. That undoubtedly drove off a lot of good other people, as well.

Hope you'll find a lot to like here!
