Colombian Navy begins hovercraft operations

Colombian Navy begins hovercraft operations
Inigo Guevara, Mexico City - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

The Colombian Navy began hovercraft operations in early October after receiving its first batch of three Griffon Hoverworks Griffon 2000TDs, IHS Jane's has learned from sources in Colombia.

The hovercrafts are understood to have been shipped in early September.

Colombian Marines are to operate them in pairs, creating units known as River Warfare Amphibious Elements along Colombia's shallow-water rivers.

Colombia has a total of eight Griffon 2000TDs on order since 2012, and the contract includes a significant training and maintenance package.

Neighbouring Peru recently placed its third order, this time for five Griffon 2000TD(M)s, which adds to previous orders for two and five units placed in 2009 and 2012, respectively.
