Bachelet reveals she was interrogated by Chile’s notorious secret police chief

  • Ex-president in the race for second term contradicts former DINA chief

  • Manuel Contreras claims she was never held during Pinochet dictatorship

With just over a month before the general elections in Chile, former President Michelle Bachelet revealed in a television interview that she had been interrogated during her youth by the notorious chief of the DINA secret police under the Pinochet dictatorship, Manuel Contreras.

Bachelet, who is considered the frontrunner in the November 17 presidential race, told CNN Chile that she was “deeply outraged” by Contreras’ recent statements that the former president was never held in the infamous Villa Grimaldi prison, as she has claimed.

Contreras is serving two life sentences at the Punta Peuco prison after he was convicted of the murders of some 1,500 opponents during the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990).

It is estimated that over 3,200 people were executed during this period, while a further 1,000 disappeared.

Former Chilean president father alleged torturers formally charged with his death

Chile charged two former officers in Augusto Pinochet's military dictatorship with being the “co-authors” of the torture that killed the father of former president Michelle Bachelet.

Alberto Bachelet was arrested in 1973 and faced court-martial for treason for having been a member of Socialist president Salvador Allende's government prior to his overthrow by Pinochet's military junta.

Retired air force colonels Ramon Caceres and Edgar Ceballos were arrested on Tuesday and charged with being the “co-authors of the crime of torture that caused the death” of Bachelet, Judge Mario Carroza said.

Bachelet, an Air Force brigadier general who opposed Pinochet's 1973 coup, was imprisoned until his death on March 12, 1974, when he was said to have died of a heart attack at the age of 51.

A medical report ordered by the courts and released in June concluded that Bachelet died as a direct result of the torture he suffered during his confinement.

Gen. Alberto Bachelet sits on the right side of the photo, 2 over from President Allende. By the time this photo was taken, he looked fairly old, and frail. Who on earth would have dreamed of wanting to torture this man, anyway?

Michelle Bachelet has shown such graciousness, and transcendence as the President of Chile several years ago. I can't imagine how she could stand to live in the same country with the US-supported monsters who tortured her, her mother, her father, and drove her brother into exile in Australia.

She has real strength.
