Relatives protested outside the prison demanding human rights for prisoners
Fifteen inmates died in fights between rival gangs, Prisons Minister Iris Varela said. The other victim was killed in a separate incident.
Some of the inmates were beheaded and others dismembered, pressure group Venezuelan Prison Observatory told AFP news agency.
-----------
About 3,700 inmates are imprisoned in Sabaneta, which was built to house 700.
Venezuela has one of the highest crime and homicide rates in Latin America and the judicial system is struggling to cope with the caseload. The prison population has been increasing with many of those incarcerated waiting for trial.

(3,747 posts)Do you ever find life affirming news or only death affirming. I'm not saying that the deaths of these prisoners isn't a tragedy and a horror; but that is all you ever seek out and report.

(6,837 posts)I admit it is a damn shame seeing it fall into chaos and the government does nothing but hide behind conspiracy theories. Beautiful, wonderful country, that is sadly falling into the abyss.
There are other countries in Latin America that have actual progressive governments that are actually succeeding and represent a much better example for the rest of the region without the conspiracy or anti-Americanism. Brazil, particulary under Lula, Chile under previous admin, and particularly Peru which has made extraordinary gains under two successive progressive governments. (You may hear some slam Garcia but that is simply because he was not a chavista)
Sorry, I am not miserable living in the US as some are who express their acrimony vicariously through anti-american moronic leaders in Latin America.

(2,035 posts)Unfortunately, that's the sad reality the Venezuelan people are living today. I suggest you take a closer look at how things have been run there lately by Maduro and the rest of his combo. If you look at it all from an objective viewpoint and put your own ideological bias aside and stopped believing for one second the dumb conspiracy theories that Nicolás likes to spew out, you wouldn't be complaining so much about Bacchus posting up only bad news from Venezuela, and you'd notice that that's pretty much most that you can find about the country anyway.

(2,035 posts)It's undeniable that the current state of affairs in my country was brought upon itself by its own people, and it falls to us and us alone to get rid of the leeches that currently run it. I'm positive that the majority of the population is no longer supportive of the government not only because Chavez is gone, but also especially because Maduro has demonstrated to be the most inept, idiotic, ignorant scumbag that our country has ever had as "president".
