HAVANA — UNESCO is including the writings of Cuban Revolution leader Ernesto "Che" Guevara in its Memory of the World Register.

The documents include original manuscripts from "Che's" youthful "Motorcycle Diaries" days, to his diary from the mountains of Bolivia where he was executed by that nation's military in 1967.

They are now recognized as world heritage and will be protected and cared for with the help of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

The Memory of the World Register comprises nearly 300 documents and collections from five continents. Guevara's works are among 54 new additions this year.

His widow, daughter and son were on hand at a ceremony in Havana on Friday to celebrate the inclusion of the documents in the register.

Unesco accepts documents of historical significance suggested by others. I have rummaged through the collection and it is very uneven because some countries submit more material than others. For example Germany submitted the documents referring to the construction of the Berlin Wall and its eventual destruction, as well as treaty material which dissolved Eastern Germany and let its territory be absorbed into Germany itself.

I'd like to see a more balanced coverage, because some countries have presented a biased set of documents and ignored others. Or I suppose the original manuscripts are in private collections or the secret Vatican archives and they can't be touched. I would love to have a first hand look at quite a few of those, but I don't think I ever will.
