FORT POLK Soldiers from El Salvador recently spent eight weeks training at the Joint Readiness Training Center in preparation for their deployment to Afghanistan.
The soldiers took the Joint Security Forces Assistant Course, administered by the 162nd Infantry Brigade. The course starts with individual skills like medical knowledge and weapons, and moves on to Afghan culture and language, then wraps up with tactical lane training.
The relationship between the U.S, and El Salvador dates back to the 1980s. The U.S. provided the country with military aid to assist in suppressing an insurgency. In 1992, peace accords were signed and U.S. assistance shifted to rebuilding the small nation.
After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, El Salvador stood by the U.S. to become a part of Coalition Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
