Bolivian Miners Accept Gov't Proposal and Abandon Strike
La Paz, May 21 (Prensa Latina) Miners of Huanuni, the largest Bolivian tin reserves, accepted today the proposal to reform the government pension system and stopped demonstrations in the capital, after 15 days of strike.
The Bolivia's Miners Federation announced that the nearly 5,000 workers will return from today to the reserve, where they will hold a meeting tomorrow.
The industry leader, Miguel Perez, told local press that the withdrawal was complied after accepting the Executive's proposal to increase pensions by 70 percent based on the wages of the last two years and decrease years of service from 35 to 30 years.
Since last Monday, the Bolivian Workers Union (COB) has been demanding a 100 percent increase in retirement pensions, a request considered excessive by the government since it endangers the long-term viability of the pension system for the rest of Bolivia's workers.
