Last edited Wed Feb 22, 2012, 01:10 PM - Edit history (1)

Some 340 people have been injured in a commuter train crash at a station in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires.

The train is reported to have slammed into the barrier at the end of the platform at the Once station in the west of the city.

The injured driver and some passengers were taken away on stretchers, with the first carriage the worst affected.

The ministry of transport said it could not rule out fatalities, with many people still said to be trapped.

Argentine police find 51st body in train crash
Updated 7m ago

BUENOS AIRES (AP) – Argentine police found another body Friday in the wreck of a train that crashed two days earlier, raising the death toll to 51 and prompting an angry confrontation with officers at the station.

Family and friends of Lucas Menghini Rey, one of the last passengers still missing, anxiously waited for the body to be identified, surrounded by a large crowd of supporters who vented their fury over the accident at officers in riot gear.

Their search and vigil for the young father has become emblematic of widespread anger over corruption and mismanagement in the train system. While the cause remains under investigation and the motorman who failed to stop the train in time has yet to make a statement, many commuters are angry that the government appeared to ignore repeated warnings about safety problems.

President Cristina Fernandez has been silent since Wednesday's crash, and left the capital Friday for her home in Argentina's remote Patagonia region. Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo planned to see her there after meeting in Buenos Aires with survivors from his country.
