http://bluenationreview.com/reports-indicate-bernie-sanders-is-a-millionaire-with-three-homes/It is highly unlikely theres anything newsworthy or untoward in Bernies unreleased tax returns which is what makes his evasiveness baffling. Perhaps its something much simpler: Bernie and Jane Sanders are millionaires. At least thats what Money magazine seems to think. So what happens to Bernies campaign if he is a millionaire?
If voters had a dime for every time Bernie Sanders railed against millionaires and billionaires, theyd be millionaires.
So perhaps its time for Bernie and his campaign to put the Wall Street hit against Hillary to rest. After all, Bernie arguably a millionaire himself believes its a personal attack:

We could, if interested (I'm not) even extrapolate those property taxes to determine the assessed value of those properties and exactly what his "net worth" is.
I still don't understand how a person who has earned close to $5M since he's been in Congress (with nice benefits) and a professional woman who earned over $100K or more a year for a number of years can have a net worth of only $800K.

(3,300 posts)I know in our state you have to put on your state tax returns , the state equivalent of your homestead value it gets recorded ......cant hide it.... but he is how ?????

(67,782 posts)...year and property taxes. This is the Federal Schedule A.
If he releases his full return, including Schedule A, that will include the property taxes that he paid. Unless of course they don't include those this year (i.e., tax the tax hit for the sake of the campaign), but previous years' returns prior to becoming a national candidate, will show them.

And I guess we all know that different towns/states/counties have different RE tax rates. Or do we?

(1,019 posts)His deductions reduced his taxable income by 25%! That's an abnormal amount for a member of Congress, and very suspicious without the Schedule A showing the details.
I am an accountant and I know that he has not released his "full" return.

(86,647 posts)that whether they are millionaires or not, as long as they are not using their money to oppress the rest of us, like so many are, is of little concern. It's not that they have that money as long as it came in ethical fashion and put to use in an ethical fashion.

(50,560 posts)You know that, like millions of other Americans, Bernie and Jane Sanders do their own taxes. I do mine too, and I don't see anything wrong with them doing that.
But here's the thing: He's using the classic "my dogs ate my homework" excuse to avoid pulling out his returns. Since he and his wife are the "dogs" here, that ultimately won't fly - and it shouldn't be flying now.
Back in the 1960s there was some hippie guru who told all his young followers, "never trust anyone over 30." He was 32 when he said it. Are we seeing this sentiment redux in Bernie's "never trust the rich" thing? If he turns out to BE one of the rich - and as simply as he is claimed to live, he should have a nice little estate set aside - we are.

(30,058 posts)It may just have a lot to do with his net worth rising from $350,000 when he first started talking about running for president to $800,000 in a year in which he earns $175,000 per year, there has to be more than the prior to him releasing the two different amounts or incorrect information has been given, lying by omission.

(15,438 posts)a working class political rebel and he becomes the very millionaire he's been railing against. Sanders needs a heckuva lot more vetting and it's long past due for that. He should get the same vetting Hillary Clinton's been subject to, but to date, he's only been skimmed over.
Then again, if the press vetted him as they'd vetted Hillary Clinton, there'd be nothing left of him. Good thing for the Democratic Party, Democrats (elected and not elected), and the country, but bad for viewer ratings, the GOP, and other miscellaneous Republicans. Can't have that in the United States, can we?

(4,035 posts)It just doesn't sound likely. If he has a home in Vermont, maybe a cabin as well, and then rent a place in D.C., that would make three homes, but not really. That he is a millionaire? It might be likely that he saved up enough to technically call himself a millionaire, but again, I doubt it. There's something else they don't want us to see, and I don't think it's something hugely nefarious, but rather something embarrassing, like some Wall Street investments, or a deductible they don't want us to see.

(9,494 posts)That's not unusual for an upper middle class couple near retirement age in the North East.
I am guessing it's something about what he has done (fraudulent deductions?) or hasn't done (no charitable contributions?) that makes him want to bury his tax past.

(34,458 posts)They aren't renting there. That would have been a savvy move, if he bought long ago, given that he planned to be in DC a long time.
What it would mean now, is that the condo is likely worth AT LEAST a half million (if it is near Capitol Hill), and real estate taxes would likely be around 1% of the current value, per year. That would account for a chunk of his itemized deductions. And if he has a small mortgage still, there would be some mortgage interest. Both of these would be reported on Schedule A.
Or, if they are now leasing it to a tenant, they would deduct expenses on Schedule E, against rental income, rather than take the deduction on Schedule A (personal deductions).

(7,480 posts)I noted on Twitter that during his victory speech last Tuesday, he talked ONLY of a "billionaire's club", rather than a "millionaire's club". I believe this is because the tax issue began to gain traction beforehand. Given the 140 character limit on Twitter, I don't think anyone caught my drift.
