(12,448 posts)of this weirdly puzzling trip, taking him away from NY just before the primary, that makes a sort of sense. This has not been a good week for Sanders; perhaps he just wants to go and hide somewhere. Why not the Vatican?

(51,725 posts)Meanwhile, Margaret Archer, the academys president, told Bloomberg News that Mr. Sanders had actively solicited the invitation for political purposes.
Sanders made the first move, for the obvious reasons, Ms. Archer said. I think in a sense he may be going for the Catholic vote, but this is not the Catholic vote, and he should remember that and act accordingly not that he will.
But hours later, Monsignor Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, a senior papal official and the academys chancellor, denied that Mr. Sanders had invited himself to the event. He told Reuters that it was his idea to invite the senator.

So he apparently got an invite by a Monsignor to a conference, not an invitation by the Vatican to meet with the Pope. Ooops.
riversedge
(70,307 posts)the conference-not meeting with the Pope would have sufficed. but that would have hit his big ego hard--to be honest at that moment

(51,725 posts)Mr. Sanders did not initially correct interviewers who suggested that he would meet with the pope, but he later clarified that he had not confirmed whether the two men would actually meet.
...
Mr. Sanders tried to move beyond the controversy and stressed his fondness for the pope and the importance of his visit. In an interview on Friday, he said Pope Francis had played a profound role in raising consciousness throughout the world, not just within the Catholic community but within all communities.

He's really quite a number. The fact that his fans claim he's a paragon of honesty astonishes me.

(15,373 posts)worse after the flagrantly outrageous dealings in NV last weekend.
But this week has shown that he and his campaign can indeed aim for an even lower bar. Two flagrant lies - OK, he's backtracked somewhat on Hillary - but this whole Pope visit situation still is fermenting. And now, his campaign is trying to pull the same kinds of shenanigans in MO as in NV to thwart the will of the voters.
I am SO done with him.
Surya Gayatri
(15,445 posts)I'm so afraid that his manifestly massive ego will not allow him to admit defeat (especially to a WOMAN!!!) and that he'll rally his disciples to go nuclear and trash the convention.
He and his whole team are abject.
And, to think his acolytes loudly excoriate Hillary for a "dirty" campaign. Oh, the biting irony.
BlueMTexpat
(15,373 posts)Spot on about his increasingly erratic behavior ...!
- To leave in the middle of a political campaign in a must-win state indicates incredible lack of common sense at the very least. That vaunted judgment of his ... not so much in evidence here.
- To visit the Vatican (Pope or not) - a religious institution - in the middle of what should be a secular political campaign, just
- To visit the Vatican - religious or not - an institution that has until recently been covering up abuse scandals, has been opposed in principle to LGBT rights, adamantly opposes women's reproductive rights, and adamantly opposes women's equal rights in general (no women priests, etc.), just again and also
- To have actively sought this visit - per Jeffrey Sachs anyway - again
Unfortunately, I suspect that you are correct and that he will try to trash the Dem convention. His campaign's behavior in NV last week and MO right now gives every indication of his doing just that.
Anyone who still seriously and sincerely believes that Bernie is any kind of Democrat is liable to be profoundly disillusioned. He is using that label for convenience now and only for this election. He's still "I" as a Senator and has had plenty of time to change that if he really were a "D."

(55,894 posts)One of the guys running the conference did. And certainly not on behalf of the Pope or the Vatican.
"How did this come about?" co-host Mika Brzezinski asked.
"It was an invitation from the Vatican," Sanders replied.
"That's kind of impressive," Brzezinski said.
"It is," Sanders replied.
