Dean abandoned us.

(15,438 posts)it and maybe it's time you do, too.
A Public Option is preferable. But single-payer? France has the BEST health care and health care insurance, rated numero uno in the world, and they don't have single-payer. They have something like ObamaCare.
What should that tell you?
The Far Left
(59 posts)All of the payments are highly regulated. It is more like 99% single payer with an average 30% deductible tax for those who can afford it for minor treatments.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_care_in_France
Dean could be liability in the general election. But I like your spin. Dean should use it to defend his positions (unless it would cost him his job).
But if Hillary campaigns with Dean in the general then the GOP will attack Dean for his apparent hypocrisy.
BlueCaliDem
(15,438 posts)There are only TWO countries that have a true single-payer system: Canada and Taiwan.
So no. No spin. I'm too pragmatic for that and leave the spinning to Bernie supporters and Republicans.
Single-payer liberals don't understand the problem in our health care system. It isn't about cheaper insurance premiums (the major rationale why single-payer proponents want single-payer in this country). It's about bringing down prices on drugs (big Pharma), doctor fees, and medical treatments.
From the WaPo link:
The Washington Post gets it just right in their exposé that you can read in its entirety here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2014/01/13/what-liberals-get-wrong-about-single-payer/
I hope that helped clear it up for you.
The Far Left
(59 posts)Functionally we are just talking about semantics.
The only difference is in the regulations in the middle and the corporate welfare we give insurers. Most countries prohibit the sale of primary care insurance, if I am not mistaken....
I wouldn't trust WAPO. Bezos bought it in 2014. He is the world's 4th richest person and one of the world's worst employers.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Bezos#Criticism
And, as health care costs rise, insurers take a bigger cut.
BlueCaliDem
(15,438 posts)They have universal guaranteed health care, just like the United States, thanks to ObamaCare.
I believe SOME countries prohibit selling health care, not most, and that's probably in the two countries that have single-payer.
I don't trust WaPo, but I don't shoot the messenger right off bat, either. However, I trust the International Federation of Health Plans and their numbers.
As I showed in the excerpt in my previous post, health care costs, doctor salaries, and special medical treatments costs in the United States FAR EXCEEDS any in other countries. This has got to change because that's the problem.
The Far Left
(59 posts)I think the Veteran's Administration is pretty good at negotiating costs with providers. Other countries do that better than we do.
Medicare for all would be the simplest way to implement guaranteed primary care for all Americans. If you want special care above that then buy premium supplemental care, or have your employer provide that as your bonus.
http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2012/01/take-2-does-free-market-hold-down-healthcare-costs
BlueCaliDem
(15,438 posts)If we don't drive those down to be fairer, we won't get anywhere.
The costs for care in this country is far too high, but only Hillary is talking about it. She wants to make Big Pharma lower their prices and lower costs for medical treatments. Why should we pay over $3,000 for a cesarean while in France it only costs $303 dollars? There's no excuse for that.
Medicine in the U.S. is outrageous, too. The same medicine we buy here for $300 a pill, for example, you can buy in Germany for $10. Believe it or not, Bill O'Reilly was reporting about that back in 2001.
Both of these need to be lowered, which would help, but it's going to be really tough to get doctors to take a large pay cut. They've got old student loans to pay AND they want to be a millionaire in five years time, so good luck with that.
Medi-Cal in California tried to cut doctor fees and costs to treatments with the result that more and more doctors and dentists refused Medi-Cal patients. Not everyone can buy supplemental insurance and it's a hassle. I believe Hillary's plan to add a public option to the PPACA is a better deal. That way, the Public Option can include expanded Medi-Caid so buying supplemental health insurance would be unnecessary since it's built in.
I just don't believe single-payer is feasible.
The Far Left
(59 posts)"Medicaid" is means tested, so the GOP would eventually water it down to nothing.
But the quality of US universal care should be no less than the basic care provided by most other industrialized nations. And we should get rid of the parts A, B, C, and D, and simply call it Medicare For All.
Nearly all other industrialized nations can provide paid higher level education, many weeks of paid time off for vacations, or child care, and guaranteed health care for everyone, so can we.
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)strength for $25 for a month's supply. Similar with Prevacid.
I've also seen companies of high dollar drugs like those for Hep C. We pay about 20% more than other countries.
We can correct that by the government negotiating drug prices.
The Far Left
(59 posts)Let's assume that US prices somehow match the International average (like that will ever happen). The insurance companies (essentially bankers) will still take their cut, at least 15%.
And insurance can only be sold when there is a risk of not being covered. A pretty perverse incentive for health insurance lobbyists isn't it?
The simple solution is the cost effective solution:
Make decent health care a human right for anyone in America.
Support Medicare for all.
Hoyt

There's nothing bullying about pointing out that someone who wants to be President is a chronic liar, incompetent in foreign affairs, etc. If Hillary and her surrogates are going to whine about people pointing that out, perhaps she should consider changing her behavior. I don't see Howard calling her out for lying her head off about Bernie. At least Bernie supporters are telling the truth.

Punctuation makes all the difference. Much as I loathe Bernie-supporting cyber bullies and their tactics - many are here on DU - I really do not believe that Bernie himself supports such actions and I don't believe that is what Dean meant.
I am glad that Dean spoke out. But now the cyber bullies will simply step up their attacks. What they really need is a definite smack-down from Bernie himself. The more he delays, the more he tacitly endorses those attacks, IMO.

It is interesting with all these back-and-forth taunts between Bernie and Drumpf in the press today. There is indeed a small subset of Bernie supporters who are exactly like Drumpf's. The irony is that they don't even recognize that.
While I still don't believe that Bernie actively supports their actions, the fact that he has not strongly condemned them outright is very telling - and frightening.

Sadly some here on DU who have been gullible enough to buy into the the right wing crap, just don't care anymore. They can't see the truth because of the brainwashing done to them by the trouble makers. There are however a lot of "REAL" Bernie supporters who don't go down the trash, bash, and doom and gloom road. They post positive things instead of constant negative bull like the stuff we see everyday over on the GDP forum. The vast majority of those posting on GDP are not really who they claim to be, and really don't want any Democrat in the WH.
