Hillary Clinton Room Post- GOP's latest Benghazi-related inquiry could benefit Hillary Clinton

HILLARY CLINTON ROOM POST

EVAN HALPER

As Congress pursues its latest investigation of Hillary Rodham Clinton's missing emails and the role they may have played in the security lapses in the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, not every Republican is delighted by the prospect of dragging her to Capitol Hill for a skewering.

Some see danger.

The Clintons have proved adept over the years at turning allegations of misdeeds in their favor. Voter uneasiness with their conduct has, in the past, yielded to voter distaste for the zealousness with which Republicans exploited it.

There are still memories of President Clinton's approval rating soaring above 64% within months of his impeachment by the House in December 1998. Voters punished Republicans in the midterm election a month before the impeachment vote.

Somehow they are dragging along the latest Benghazi inquiry at such a snail's pace that it won't be ready for release until the fall of 2016. I think this 'October surprise' will roll out and crash.

For starters, the whole 'scandal' is hot air; there is almost no substance at all, which makes the Republicans look a little silly.

Secondly, it is boring and ordinary people just don't care about it. (Really, where's the sex?)

And finally, the idea that the Republicans spent 7 years on this investigation, and somehow happened to finish up just before the election, is so obviously a political stunt that even the most uninformed voter can see through it. This is going to make the Republicans look even more ridiculous.

If this is their strategy, I say 'bring it on'!

Good for Hillary on demanding a public hearing.
