"I really hate her...I'll think of a reason later..."

A little levity and music here. After seeing Secretary Clinton berated in GD-P over everything from her daughter sitting on a stage under a banner with the Iowa state motto, to her husband wearing a flannel shirt, to her choice of costume jewelry accessories, I'm reminded of a country music song (ok, I live in Nashville, so pretty much anything reminds me of a country song). The comically bitter protagonist of the song denounces her rival:
...."She may be an angel who spends all winter
Bringin' the homeless blankets and dinner
A regular Nobel Peace Prize winner
But I really hate her, I'll think of a reason later

Inside her head may lay all the answers
For curin' diseases from baldness to cancer
Salt of the earth and a real good dancer
But I really hate her, I'll think of a reason later..."

Yep, code-switching is very common for those of us who are multi-dialectic. Tanuki Feb 2016 #6

*disclaimer* I will be attending my 7th Bonnaroo festive in Manchester in June--rock on (although a lot of blue grass this year)

my fave country song at this time has the line:

"God is great, beer is good, people are crazy"

getting a little twang in her voice when she speaks sometimes. She spent over a decade in Arkansas and surely picked up a piece of an accent there and I know from experience that comes back on you!

We left WV when I was 2 but my folks had accents, and we spent lots of time there when I was growing up. Even now when I talk to family back there, in no time flat I'm picking it up. It's never as strong as theirs. Sometimes even I had to stop and puzzle out what they said.

For example, one winter my Aunt (pronounced ain't) Bobbie's car broke down. A cop stopped and asked if she had any "flares". She just looked at him and said "Don't b'lieve thurz eny growed round cheer rat now. Hits winter"

So yeah, some of that creeps back in. It's fun and I love it and poo on anyone who knocks Hilz when it happens to her.

I grew up mostly in West Virginia but lived some early years elsewhere due to my dad's army service, now live in Tennessee, and lived in Massachusetts for many years in between. I remember going to a professional meeting in Baltimore when in I lived in Massachusetts and sharing a cab from the airport to the hotel with some colleagues. While I sat in the front seat and chatted with the local driver, I could tell my friends were laughing at me in the back. When I asked them later what that was about, they said that the minute I started talking to the driver, I switched back to a "southern accent." I was totally unaware of it, and nobody thought I was trying to "pander" to the cab driver! It's just something that happens naturally.
