A spokesman for Hillary Clinton, Brian Fallon, on Wednesday criticized Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) as the only "holdout" who will not participate in an unsanctioned debate to be hosted by MSNBC and the New Hampshire Union-Leader in February.
"The Sanders campaign is the one hold out. We think they should join us in saying they will be in New Hampshire next week," Fallon said on CNN.
Sanders' campaign manager, Jeff Weaver, said on Tuesday that the Vermont senator would not attend a debate not sanctioned by the DNC due to concern that his participation would keep him from attending future official debates.
Clinton's campaign said she would "participate in a debate in New Hampshire if the other candidates agree, which would allow the DNC to sanction the debate." And former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said he would attend the unsanctioned debate.

(15,696 posts)Those who are bad at debating never want more debates, but they don't want to be accused of dodging said debates. They always try to come up with a reason to decline invitations to more debates, in order to avoid being called debate dodgers. Both Trump and Sanders are now those debate dodgers.
The media always carries stories about debates, and you don't ever want to be the candidate who appears too cowardly to debate your opponents any time and any place. Good debate press is always available to those candidates who know how to get it.
And this phenomenon is centuries old. Can you imagine the furor if either Lincoln or Douglas had not been willing to face the other in a debate?

(42,862 posts)The cheers from his supporters seem to contradict that, but the cheers seem to be perfunctory, nervous, and obligatory over-compensation.
And if I recall correctly, it seems that Bernie's poll numbers always take a dip after each debate. If that's accurate, then it certainly makes sense why Bernie would want to avoid them. The moderator might want to talk about something other than economic issues.

(50,567 posts)If Bernie decided to fry and eat a puppy on national television, they would cheer on the precise blend of spices he chose. Rave about the crisp crackle of the oil he fried it in. Marvel at his beautiful dentition as his teeth cleanly sliced through the tender meat. Then claim that if Hillary were to eat a puppy on national television she'd only be slavishly copying Bernie's bold lead.
The rest of us, naturally, would be shaking these fools by the shoulders and screaming, "DUDE! He ATE A FUCKING PUPPY ON TELEVISION! And you're cheering him on! What the hell is wrong with him? What the fuck is wrong with YOU?"
(Full disclosure: Senator Sanders, so far as I know, is not planning to eat a puppy on national television. However, I wouldn't put it past Trump.)

(1,968 posts)I like the idea of unsanctioned debates in the first place, but if Sanders' agreement would allow the DNC to sanction it...well, I guess so.
But why don't they just sanction it right here and now? Then Sanders can join without any issues, and we all know he simply doesn't debate well.

(1,196 posts)The debate rules are set up to benefit Hillary. But that backfired for her so now that she is in trouble she expects Bernie to break the rules to accommodate her. Bernie needs to stick to his guns and refuse to break the DNC rules for Hillary's sake. If Hillary participates in the unsanctioned debate anyway, Bernie should demand she be banned from any more DNC sanctioned debates as the rules state and DWS has threatened earlier before Bernie's surge.

(5,530 posts)I want Bernie to win, but I'll vote for Hill if she prevails. My problem is she's a corporate lapdog and would be the lesser of two evils. I realize she has experience but I can't believe she would change the political environment. I voted for Bill in 92 primarily for their commitment to single payer health care, but they blew it and caved. I voted for him in 96 as the lesser of two evils. I'm tired of having to do that. Bernie is exciting us because he makes sense.

(32,623 posts)The inaccurate "lapdog" smear is enough of a hint
So nutty that not a single Bernie guy can explain how the hell he'd flip over 2 dozen solid red congressional districts -minimum!- it would take to embrace a ground up overhaul for Bernie's plans. And I guess Pelosi would need to be primaried now too, considering her remarks today. LOL good luck with THAT.
rickford66
(5,530 posts)Lapdog isn't a smear when you realize all the money donated or "earned" from speaking fees by stroking the corporate 1%. What she has going for her compared to the GOP candidates, is she isn't evil. I believe she really would like to improve the lives of everyone and she has done a lot, but she is still beholden to the big money. She's stuck in the position of being a moderate Republican. I want a real Democrat. Remember the Truman quote .... "Given the choice between a Republican and someone who acts like a Republican, people will vote for the real Republican all the time." The politicians are right of center while the nation as a whole is left of center.
