Des Moines Register editorial: Clinton Email Saga Losing Steam (HILLARY GROUP)
Hillary Clinton has gotten some good news for a change on the continuing saga over her use of a private email server when she was secretary of state.
First, the U.S. Justice Department said in a court filing last week that Clinton did not violate federal policy in deleting personal emails before turning over 30,000 messages to the government. Second, the Colorado company that managed Clintons private email server said it had no knowledge that the server had been wiped.
These developments count as good news because they support Clintons repeated assertion that she violated no State Department policy and they could clear up doubts about whether she deleted emails containing official government business.
Assuming Clinton in fact deleted only personal messages, it will be harder for critics to perpetuate that line of attack much longer. Still, U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley is on the case, asking for any recovered emails to be independently reviewed, and conservative groups have asked a federal judge for access to deleted email messages. So the story is not over just yet.
Meanwhile, there is the matter of whether the email traffic to and from Clintons private account contained classified secrets. It appears the classified information contained on messages identified so far was deemed reclassified as confidential after the fact, which confirms statements by the Clinton campaign....
