Eugene Robinson: Sanders’s scorched-earth campaign is a gift to Trump

A must-read.

Bernie Sanders is playing a dangerous game. If he and his campaign continue their scorched-earth attacks against the Democratic Party, they will succeed in only one thing: electing Donald Trump as president.

I say this as someone who shares much of Sanders’s political philosophy; I, too, for example, see health care as a basic right. He has run a remarkable and historically significant campaign, pulling the party to the left and pumping it full of new progressive vigor. His crowds are almost as big as Trump’s and perhaps even more enthusiastic. Most important, he has brought legions of young people into the political process.

But he hasn’t won the nomination.
(snip)
Instead of accepting this obvious fact, the Sanders campaign is behaving like a 2-year-old who can’t have ice cream for breakfast. All along, Sanders and his aides have claimed that the party establishment was unfairly tipping the scales in favor of Clinton. Now the Sanders people have gone further and are deliberately stoking anger and a sense of grievance — less against Clinton than the party itself. This is reckless in the extreme, and it could put Trump in the White House.
(snip)
Given this context, Sanders and his campaign are being shamefully irresponsible. Rather than accept defeat, they claim loudly that the party’s nominating process was rigged against them. They display a degree of entitlement that they have not earned.

He calls on Sanders to stop attacking Clinton and the Democratic party, and ends with this: "I mean right now. This is serious."

Does Democratic Underground keep helping this along, watching the damage escalate?

Gave all her delegates to Obama, and nominated him on the convention floor; urged her supporters to vote for him.

She'd won the popular vote, and the delegate count was very close. But she cared more about the country and the party than about her own ego.

Hillary did not spend her 08 campaign tearing down the Democratic Party. She didn't call her opponent or the Democrats "whores". She didn't say the entire primary was rigged. She didn't denigrate long time advocates like Planned Parenthood and Dolores Huerta for being in the tank and establishment. She didn't dismiss whole swathes of votes as being not really representative. She didn't constantly accuse the Democrats or her opponent of being corrupt and no better than the Republicans. And she certainly didn't excuse her supporters for harassing and stalking delegates and posting death threats to party leaders and their families.

"Staying in the race" is not the problem unless that is now a euphemism for trying to destroy the party and constantly attack its leaders and allies.
