THE BIG IDEA: Burlington College is feeling the burn.Burlington College said its financial troubles are connected to Mrs. Sanderss 2010 purchase of 32 acres of lakefront property, part of a botched expansion plan. The college was placed on academic probation in 2014 by its accrediting agency and it faced cash flow problems due to the imminent loss of a line of credit, The Posts Nick Anderson reports. To survive, the school has tried to sell land but it was not enough to remain solvent.
Jane Sanders was president from 2004 until 2011, when she stepped down amid an apparent dispute with the colleges board. She left with a $200,000 severance package.
-- Mrs. Sanders has become an increasingly prominent figure in her husbands campaign. The onetime community activist routinely travels with him and has become a ubiquitous surrogate on cable TV.
-- The failure of Burlington College gives credence to two arguments routinely made by the Clinton campaign and its allies:
First, Bernie and Jane were insufficiently vetted by the mainstream media...... more in link
Second, Sanders is making fantastical promises that are unfeasible..... more in link

(10,014 posts)The media didn't do their job and probably won't now. I don't care if he has lost the nomination, I still want him vetted.

(1,048 posts)Bet you if Bill or Hillary had been the President of a college that shut down because of a bad land deal people would be all over it. Time to start looking deeper into the Sanders dealings since everything Clinton is thrown out there.

(6,444 posts)It mustn't be easy for a college to fail so HARD! It takes a lot of bad missteps to cause that!
Bad and stupid Judgment!!!

(2,792 posts)Jane's "misleading" loan application has real significance at this point. It was a "liar" loan of sorts, since Jane was overstating the college's financial ability to repay.
I am asking myself what role Jane has in the finances of Bernie's presidential campaign. She did play such a role in his senate campaigns, and she even took pay from campaign funds for her work. That would appear in the infamous tax returns as well.
You can't make up stuff like this. I can't wait to see the miniseries based on "The Rise and Fall of the Bern."

(6,444 posts)Cannot be ignored! JUST BIG AND HORRIBLE FAIL!
Shows really bad judgment! at least that! The media might rethink these characters now!

(24,396 posts)Due diligence takes a back seat to actions that governing boards see as "exhibiting leadership."
Well, Jane Sanders' leadership led them into insolvency.
I've seen this same drama played out at non-profits where small, living-on-the-edge institutions are looking for that magic bullet that will solve decades of financial problems. They are ripe for being influenced by people who talk a big game, especially when any caution expressed about the game is characterized as defeatism by the "leader" advocating the big game.

(161 posts)Lets not forget how they enriched their family and friends
"Bernie Sanders and his wife have on numerous occasions steered money from organizations under their control to friends and family members, public records show.
The payments benefitted the wife of the Democratic presidential candidate, his stepdaughter, and the son of a former colleague in city government whom Sanders has described as a close friend."
"the school had paid huge sums to the Vermont Woodworking School, which is run by Driscoll (Jane Sanders daughter). The college eventually paid the school more than $500,000 for classes at its Fairfax, Vt., campus, about 30 miles from Burlington."
