No one would accuse Donald Trump of being a knowledgeable veteran of the political scene to begin with, but what might be the most fascinating aspect of his ascendancy to the republican nomination is his seeming total lack of interest in learning anything. For instance, a full year into his campaign, one might expect him to have figured out that Georgia is traditionally a solidly red state in the general election and that he should be dominating there. Instead he’s cluelessly bragging about the fact that his general election rival Hillary Clinton is within the margin of error of taking Georgia away from him.
“Thank you Georgia,” reads Donald Trump’s tweet as he goes on to list the Atlanta Journal Constitution poll results of “Donald Trump 45%, Hillary Clinton 41%” as if this were something to be bragging about in that particular red state. As the newspaper itself acknowledged in the article it published announcing the poll numbers, the margin of error is greater than the four point margin, meaning that Trump and Hillary are statistically tied in Georgia — which he should be winning handily.
It’s not clear what might be the greater liability here. On the one hand Donald Trump appears to have such narrow appeal, even among conservatives, that he’s entering the general election in danger of losing the solidly conservative Georgia. That’s a state that even the unpopular 2012 republican nominee Mitt Romney won by double digits over President Obama. In fact Georgia has gone to the republicans in the last five presidential elections. So it’s a huge liability for Trump that he’s in danger of losing a state that had been initially assumed to be safely in the republican column.
But it’s arguably an even bigger liability that Trump doesn’t seem to know he’s supposed to be winning Georgia....
