Bill Clinton was a failed president

I keep hearing this in places on this site... extreme criticisms of his presidency.

I was a recent college grad working a full-time high-tech job when Bill was President. The economy was good. We weren't at war. People were optimistic. People had hope and felt the government was doing a good job (certainly compared to today).

Sure, things weren't perfect and people can nit-pick about his Presidency, but I remember Hillary fighting HARD for insurance reform. Meanwhile, one of Bill's greatest assets was he was a good negotiator and compromiser. I am not sure where this idea that compromise is bad comes from, but anyone that thinks ANY politician can be a bull in a china shop and ramrod their agenda through is deluding themselves. Bill took where it was important and gave where he needed to - and the important part was (much) more good happened than bad.

That is why Hillary is popular. Because people who are old enough to remember the Clinton years (and frankly, most BS supporters are not in that group) remember them being good times and remember Bill being an effective leader. If you talk to people who didn't like Bill Clinton - up until a year ago, the only complaints were the Lewinsky stuff, the assault weapons ban, etc. His crime bill being bashed is total revisionist history. Hillary is right - people don't remember what was going on back then and that bill was needed and helpful.

So if Bill was a horrible President, we sure could use another equally 'horrible' President. That is why Hillary is so strongly supported among people 40+. It's not because they don't "get" the struggles of the younger folks. It's that they are more mature, more seasoned, more experienced, more knowledgeable, they have been around the block more times, have listened to more promises and seen which ones came true and which didn't. And most of all, they remember the 1990's as good times.

And they want more good times. And they are right.

The folks who spread the meme that Bill was Republican lite, are a-holes who don't know the first thing about politics. The Democrats fought the good fight in the 90's, the reality is events had turned against us 15 years ealier and caused a loss of confidence in our handling of the economy.

act like life was sooo much better in the 1950's.

Really? When a woman made sure to have dinner on the table, or else she might get a hand across the face? When the family took a vacation to a place 2 states away in the station wagon? Where there was one car, one TV, and beef was a luxury for Sunday evenings only? Where you worked until you were 65, and died before you were 70?

No way. People criticize those glued to their smart phones or being so "consumer-ish", but the fact is our lives have gotten better.

Sure, some mistakes have been made along the way but we need course corrections, not a complete overhaul of our entire economic and social structure that Bernie is proposing. We need someone like Clinton who will work with what we have and make it better. And most of all, we need someone who knows what it's like to be in the "big chair". Who has a history of success at various levels of government and who knows how to get things done. The last one is the most critical of all. What good is it to have uncompromising positions if that means they never get achieved.

A return to the Clinton years would be GREAT for America.

that meme against Al Gore.

We owe them our thanks for eight years of shrub and the ills from those years that are still with us today!

Had Gore won, NAFTA could - and would - have been tweaked to avoid some of its worst ills; prison reform could have been tweaked; financial institutions would have been better regulated; environmental policies would have been better, etc. Most of all, we would very likely never have had 9-11 (Gore would have paid attention to his Daily Intelligence Briefings and especially to Richard Clarke) and definitely NOT wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, both of which stoked and exacerbated the ME situation of today.

We MUST do a better job of teaching both history and politics in our schools. These privileged ignorant ones obviously paid no attention whatsoever.

solely based on the internment of the Japanese. Yes, that was a horrible mistake . One we should not want to repeat. We learn from our mistakes and hopefully don't repeat them again.

Clinton made mistakes but compared to Reagan or Nixon he did pretty well.

As Dan Savage said on Real Time a couple of weeks ago confirming his support for Hillary, "The lesser of two evils is still lesser." I don't consider Hillary evil. I don't think she's a particularly good politician but she is certainly, qualified, competent and knowledgeable. I like her and I think she will make a fine President. Maybe she's not as liberal as I might like but I can live with that. I'm old and have seen how much blind idealism has cost us.

or to paraphrase Voltaire, don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

Reminds me of a teacher who gave bad grades to students he didn't like.

Such assessments are neither just nor historically objective.

I was doing well, had just started my career, had money in the bank. Along the way I managed to get poisoned against Clinton and I bought into the selling out through DOMA and DADT. I honestly think it was Michael Moore that did it. He was the biggest critic of Clinton's policies that I remember and had an absolutist attitude. I was young and idealistic, hated the idea of compromise and devoured every thing he said. After voting for Nader in 2000, 9/11 cured me of those attitudes.

because he is Hillary's husband; they have to say his presidency failed so they can blame her with the failure. All of this smoke and mirrors stuff they have to do in service to the purity of their bernitude. Everything is viewed through that lens, no matter how false, outlandish, fascistic and out of context it is.

It indicates that the person is repeating some rhetoric they have heard from a talking head or from years of hate.

Same goes when they tell you how terrible Obama is. Rarely does anyone saying that offer qualified examples of his terribleness.

We started our family after Clinton's first election. 'Hope', indeed. I felt like the world had suddenly brightened; I hated everything Reagan stood for, as any reasonable person should. The vitriol cannon started up about day 23, and it Has. Never. Stopped. Considering the General Idiocy of the time, we were extremely lucky to have him.

I suspect anyone holding up their corner of the world or raising children lives through the twists and turns and learns to appreciate the better times. Clinton and Gore did a lot of good, especially during the first term. He was the best possible candidate, although my wife talked me out of voting for Jerry Brown in the primary.

Ah, Jerry Brown. Civil servant. Curmudgeonly and competent.

Gore's loss was devastating to the world. Set everything back eight years, climate change response, international stability, everything -- we'll be paying those bills for effing ever. And yet a herd of Greens at a party jostled me for my Gore T-shirt, and claimed he was just as bad as Bush.

Yes, so, privately -- I loved those years. 1993 on was just awesome, until 12/12/2000, the day the Supreme Court hacked the system and threw us off the tracks and into Bush Hell.

We still haven't really crawled out. But our fall was stopped single-handedly by the coolest President in American history, and certainly one of the most competent. 'Please proceed, Governor.' Love that man.

Bernie's awesome, period. I don't accept the arguments of Bernie supporters who hate Hillary; the differences between the two are seriously minimal when it comes to the larger conflict. Hillary's fine by me. I think she's a closet hippie who's had a blowtorch pointed at her for twenty years. She knows all the ropes, completely and absolutely. They hate her. They fear her.

So she's doing something right.

And you're right, when I get nostalgic I miss 1993. It was a beautiful year.
