Could Bernie’s Campaign Run Out of Money?

http://bluenationreview.com/could-bernies-campaign-run-out-of-money/

The staggering fact that Bernie’s campaign spent $46 million in March — everything they raised — brings up an interesting question: At this burn rate, could his campaign end up with cash problems?

The latest Franklin & Marshall poll in Pennsylvania shows Hillary with a double digit lead over Bernie. In New York, she defeated him by a big margin despite being outspent by $3 million.

As Bernie’s path to the nomination narrows to the point of mathematical impossibility, he’ll likely face a drop-off in contributions. There is some anecdotal evidence of a dip in energy:

@AlGiordano On Apr 14, BerniePB callers made 240k calls to NY and 35k to PA. PA today? 945. Yesterday's overall goal was 40k; they hit 12k.

According to FEC reports, Bernie has $17 million cash on hand, which seems like a substantial sum until you realize Hillary has $29 million and is operating at a lower burn rate.

If Bernie’s fundraising drops off in April because of his decisive defeat in New York and if he continues outspending Hillary by 2-1 in an attempt to close the delegate gap, it is not inconceivable that his vaunted fundraising prowess will meet the inexorable reality of cash flow: If you spend more than you make, you’ll eventually run out of money.

The idea that Bernie might spend more than he raised has precedent. Politico analyzed Bernie’s expenditures and noted that in January, “his campaign raised $20 million while spending $32.4 million.”

By the end of February, [Bob] Shrum noted, it was no surprise that Sanders finished the month with less cash on hand than Clinton despite having raised more: He’s using his bank account to try to catch up.

eat more decently with that amount of money.

Better spent than rock star rallies and tv campaign ads that go nowhere.

Going to Europe is expensive we have been to Spain although we had a place to stay unless you know someone in Europe its costly my nephew lives in Europe so I know the expense unless you have family there to stay with.....the prices on things in Europe is very expensive, compare to here we gone shopping in Spain..........its double compare to ours here unless you get a deal on a package...flying ..if you don't have family there...its costly.

So his trip to Rome and paying for the expense of secret service also on our tax dollars ....is a lot of cost...guess he is using that 27 dollars.....they are giving him....

and he's always been the underdog. What will likely drop first is the big donors. Those of devout faith in him will continue giving until the end.

but basically it pointed out that the cost of rallying tens of thousands of people can run into the millions of dollars per event, and all for not much more than a photo op. I wonder if we'll still see more massive Sanders rallies going forward, which would be bad for Bernie because I hear he is terrible at retail politics like shaking hands and working a ropeline.

Today - all you need are a couple of millionaires to foot your bills so until they get burned out writing checks the candidates can keep running and running and running.

If Bernies campaign is really funded by individual $27 donations (which I doubt) it's entirely possible he could run out of money very soon. His campaign seems to have stalled after New York and very few people want to throw money at a lost cause.

that $27 to pay for tuition after all, as it now looks like they won't be getting their free tuition and a YUGE tuition refund check the day after Sanders had won the D nomination.

They may still have mom drive them to the YUGE rallies, though...

I think their goal is to not go under before the convention. That's why they're spinning the "he still has a chance" meme - to keep the $27 donations coming so they can stumble along until Philadelphia.

I wouldn't be at surprised if they go in the red after returing the millions in illegal donations they've received. I suspect they are using those donations as a float to keep the campaign going, returning the money only after it gets flagged by the FEC.

...he seems to be different with regards to this aspect of campaigning than everyone else in history.

If I had been a Bernie supporter there is no way I'd be near the contribution limit as it would take at least 27 months of donating (based on what I could 'spare') before I hit it and donating that much would have hurt us, too.

I picture hungry children of Bernie supporters every time I read about his financing and I picture those children as very resentful when they grow up.
