U.S. Senate blocks bid to repeal war authorizations

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate rejected an amendment on Wednesday that would have forced the repeal of war resolutions used as the legal basis for U.S. military actions in Iraq, Afghanistan and against extremists in several other countries.

As voting continued the vote was 59 to 36 to kill the measure, which would have put an end after six months to authorizations for the use of military force (AUMF) passed in 2001 and 2002. That was far more than the 51 needed to pass.
