It'll soon be legal to "willfully annoy" people in Grand Rapids, Michigan

It’s now legal to be a jerk within city limits.

Grand Rapids City Commission is nixing a 38-year-old section of city code that states “no person shall willfully annoy another person.” The city attorney recommended repealing the language, saying it’s “subject to a variety of interpretations” as to what exactly is annoying.

“It’s unconstitutional in terms of being vague,” City Attorney Catherine Mish said. “It’s simply unenforceable.”

The commission is expected Tuesday, March 11, to give final approval to removing the language. Note, however, it still would be illegal under city code to commit assault or battery on another person, to molest another person, to recklessly endanger the life, health or well-being of any person or to willfully obstruct someone on a street or sidewalk or in a public place.
